         Department of General Medicine was established at Government Theni Medical College at the inception of the college. Since then outpatient, inpatient and emergency services are provided all days in a week. The Department has four units and is run by Talented Professors, Associate professors and Assistant Professors.

Because of the strenuous efforts taken by successive professors and assistant professors the department has raised to present state in delivering effective health care services to patients and bringing out meritorious undergraduate students. The department is also conducting many academic activities for paramedical students.

The Department’s outpatient and inpatient services is supported by medical and paramedical staff as per MCI norms. On average we are providing service to 1500 outpatients per day. Almost entire spectrum of medical problems is seen in patients attending our hospital.

Patients are admitted in separate male and female wards with total bed strength of 120, (60 male and 60 female) and those presenting with Medical Emergencies are admitted in Medical intensive care unit with bed strength of 15. Medical intensive care unit has all necessary required infrastructure and bio medical equipments supported by fully trained staff round the clock .The bed occupancy rate in all medical wards is about 100%.

The department has qualified teachers who take care of all academic activities for the students.
Academic sessions include daily clinical demonstrations and theory lecture classes.
Periodically CME programmes are conducted and lectures delivered by renowned speakers from various parts of state. The department has excelled in producing good results in so far conducted university examinations.
